GOR II

Anyway after the run and a bag of hot chips we piled back in the car to drive the most scenic part of the Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay to Lorne. It was pretty darn beautiful. I didn't bother taking any photos though, you'll have to go see it yourself.

The best bit however - some might say the highlight of the whole trip - was when Mel said "Hey let's turn off the road here, I think there might be koalas nearby..." Say no more, Sarah nearly pulled a handbrake turn when she heard the word "koalas" and we went up some back road into the hills when suddenly we started seeing the furry little critters perched high up in the trees, napping balls of fluff.

Suddenly we rounded a corner and there was one, wide awake (I think they sleep like 22 hours a day, so it was damn good timing) and perched on a branch hanging over the road, only about 7 foot up. We could nearly reach up and grab him. I tried, but he was a bit too high, I wanted to pull the car around and get up on the roof but apparently you're not supposed to cuddle wild animals. Who'd have thought?

Anyway that was pretty exciting, we stayed watching him nibble gum leaves for a while and admiring the view down to the beach, and eventually moseyed on back home to Mel's family holiday house at Anglesea.

Nat and Colin showed up a couple of hours later and the next day the most active thing we did was a wander along the windswept beach right across the road from the house. Absolutely gorgeous beach, doggies running everywhere (chasing the rare and endangered hooded dodderals which we saw - I think there are only like 300 left. They almost lost another couple when this pooch when barrelling after them)

We saw that koala as well! We were driving along the great ocean road and he was asleep on a branch hanging over the road.

I would be jealous of all the sleep koalas get if not for the fact that they have to digest eucalyptus oil. They're only that still because they have no energy.
