Dodging the Dengue

Sarah and I had a fantastic time in Hongkers with Woody and Ramsay, staying at their amazing apartment - check out the view:

We're not that into shopping and the touristy stuff is a bit of a joke compared to what we'd seen in China, but one day we decided to do the token tourist effort and take the tram up to the Peak and hike a few kilometres of the Hong Kong Trail.

Tram was nice and the views at the top were incredible - thankfully we'd picked the one day where the smog wasn't sitting heavy over the skyline and we could see right out to the hills beyond Kowloon and in the other direction to the outlying islands.

The jungle at the top was tropical and beautiful, huge butterflies, birds calling... then clouds of angry mosquitos biting savagely. Luckily for me they find Sarah a sweeter target so her legs were suddenly covered in the biting bastards. That's when we started seeing the signs pasted everywhere with a huge mozzie photo and the words "Watch out for Dengue fever!!! Wear insect repellent and long sleeves and pants!" A little too late for us, all we could do was move faster than the bugs.

So we went off on a swift trot, a canter and then finally a gallop, crashing through the jungle along the path followed by swarms of the horrible creatures. Everytime we paused they attacked so we just had to keep going. At that speed we were startling wildlife too and a 6-foot long snake dropped right onto the path in between me and Sarah and the poor girl screamed and stopped her foot in mid-air to avoid stepping on it and incurring it's wrath. Happy days.
