Kitty Cats

Last Saturday Sarah and I got on our bikes and pedalled over to the Live Green exhibition at the park outside Sydney Uni, it was supposed to be “a vibrant, new event for the City that demonstrates how we can all learn to live green. Join us for great bands, organic and locally grown food, children's activities, free seminars, workshops, stalls and more!” And indeed it was so. A pretty cool event and it got quite a few people considering that 5 years ago it would have been hard core hippies only. I picked up a lot of interesting info about living more sustainably in the city.

Anyway I had tempted Sarah into riding by telling her that afterwards we’d go by Newtown and check out the cat protection society. What was I thinking??? That someone we’d see all these abandoned kitties playing together and then lightly walk away and not get one?

I thought if we’re getting a cat I’d rather get two. I think it’s got to be deadly boring for a cat to be stuck inside an apartment all itself while we’re at work all day, at least if there’s two of them, they’ll find ways to keep amused! So we looked at the cats which had come in together and didn’t want to be separated. There were three pairs recently arrived and still in cages (not part of the general population yet) and all three sets were gorgeous. Then there was the huge run of cats upstairs that was a bit overwhelming to be honest. We went back down and spent some more time with the three caged couples then cycled off home to think about it.

Sarah favoured a black and white cat, along with a ginger one, which were lovely. I fell in love with a fluffy grey one and a little tabby in the cage above. A touch choice.

On Sunday I took off at 5.30am for a 5 hour bike ride, followed by a short run and picking up a wetsuit in Manly, getting home at 1pm when the Cat Protection Society closed at 2.30. So we buzzed off pronto, checked out the cats again and decided to go with the grey and tabby pair.

Two females, apparently about 18 months old, but very small cats and looking like they’re much younger. Given up when their owner moved into aged care and couldn’t look after them anymore. They’d only just been desexed and they actually had to take the stitches out then and there before we could take them home. Named Whisper and Tabatha, so clearly they needed renaming. Very quiet and timid, used to being indoor cats and actually having to remain inside because of the tabby’s white nose which is susceptible to skin cancer.

So into the cat carrier and home they went, we put them into the second bedroom with a scratching post, litter and food and left them to acclimate.

We renamed them Lenny (tabby) and Guillermo (grey fluffy) and over the last few days have started to see them get used to us and to the house and their personalities start to come out. Basically they’re both very loving cats who are gentle as anything and really enjoy snuggling with us on the couch. Sarah and I are besotted.

I reckon you made a good choice. They look like very friendly cats. And fluffy cats are always good when it gets cold.
